May 5, 1961 – Astronaut Alan Shepard Jr. became the first American to enter space riding aboard Mercury-Redstone 3, going by the callsign “Freedom 7”. This model is made to scale of the real Mercury-Redstone Launch Vehicle with a fair amount of detail.
